Navigating Global Airport Transit Rules

International flight connections often trigger unexpected visa requirements. Thousands of passengers each year are denied boarding at their origin airport because they lack an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) or Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) for their layover city.

At EntryGlobe, our intelligence engine analyzes transit requirements across three critical dimensions:
  • Airside vs. Landside Transit
  • Terminal Layout and Self-Transfer Flights
  • Connecting Baggage Agreements

  • Airside Transit
  • Airside transit means arriving on an international flight and remaining strictly within the international transit area of the airport without passing through immigration passport control before boarding your onward flight.
  • Major Airside Transit Hubs: Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH), Istanbul (IST), Singapore (SIN), Amsterdam (AMS), Frankfurt (FRA).
  • Nationality Restrictions: Even for airside transit, certain nationalities require an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) when transiting European Schengen airports (e.g., passing through Paris CDG or Frankfurt FRA).

  • Landside Transit
  • Landside transit occurs whenever you must pass through border immigration into the host country. You always need transit entry permission if:
  • You must change airports (e.g., landing at London Gatwick and departing from London Heathrow; or landing at Tokyo Narita and departing from Tokyo Haneda).
  • You must change terminals that require exiting the secure zone.
  • Your layover exceeds the airport's permitted airside hours (e.g., overnight layovers in airports with no 24-hour transit facilities).

  • The "Separate Tickets" / Self-Transfer Trap
  • If you book two separate tickets on different airlines (e.g., Airline A from Karachi to Dubai, and Airline B from Dubai to London) without an interline baggage agreement:
  • You must exit passport control to retrieve your checked bags from the baggage carousel.
  • You must check in again at the departure hall desk.
  • Result: You are entering the country landside! You must have a full visa or visa-on-arrival for that country, or the first airline will deny you boarding at departure.

  • Always verify whether your transit is on a single PNR ticket with through-checked baggage before booking your flights.
